The Odisha government issued warning for a possible flood in Mahanadi catchments after the release of water from Harakud dam and directed collectors of several districts to remain alert.

Special Relief Commissioner Bishnupada Sethi has asked the collectors in Mahanadi system to remain alert and take precautionary action as Hirakud dam opened 25 gates before 5- 6 pm today and released about 4 lakh cusec of flood water.

“Collectors of the 11 districts especially Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Kendrapara and Puri including Sambalpur have been directed to take preemptive measures and if necessary, evacuate people from the low-lying areas. The five other districts where the flood alert has been sounded are Subarnapur, Boudh, Nayagarh, Angul and Khurda,” Sethi said, adding the NDRF, ODRAF and the fire personnel have been kept in readiness to meet any emergency.
