Much-awaited Gurupriya bridge in Malkangiri opened for public use

Malkangiri: The much-awaited Gurupriya bridge in Malkangiri was opened for public use on Wednesday. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will formally inaugurate the bridge soon.

Inauguration of the bridge which was scheduled to be held by the Chief Minister on July 18, has been postponed for an indefinite period due to adverse weather conditions.

Works Department Junior Engineer Suresh Chandra Mishra said, “Incessant rains have increased the water level in the local reservoir, making it unsafe for boats; and that is the reason why we have allowed commuters to use the bridge.”

The 910-metre-long bridge will connect nearly nine panchayats in the cutoff areas of the district benefiting about 30,000 people.

The bridge’s executing agency Royal Infrastructure project director Niranjan Kumar said, “The construction work has been completed and right now only light vehicles are being allowed to ply on the bridge.”
