L V Prasad Eye Institute opens its fourth Secondary Centre in Odisha,

Bijayananda Patnaik Eye Centre at Keonjhar

Report by Malaya Mohapatra, Keonjhar: L V Prasad Eye Institute’s 18th Secondary Eye Care Centre, and the fourth secondary centre in the state of Odisha, was inaugurated at Keonjhar by Pratap Jena, Health minister of Odisha. This facility will boost the healthcare facilities of Keonjhar and nearby districts with provision of modern equipment and technology, he commented. Badri Narayan Patra, Minister School and Mass Education , Sakuntala Laguri ,MP, Abhiram Naik,local MLA were among the other distinguished guest at the inaugural ceremony. The late Dr Bijayananda Patnaik noted Eye surgeon and his wife Dr Rajinder Kalsi Patnaik had gifted the land. The Combat Blindness International, USA supported the construction of the hospital and equipment through a generous gift from the Jack Deloss Taylor Charitable Trust, USA.

Keonjhar district is one of the five most scheduled areas of Odisha. To make quality eye care accessible and affordable, LVPEI along with its partners, and local support from the community, has established a comprehensive eye care facility in the district of Keonjhar. Additionally, low vision rehabilitation services will also be provided at the centre through its centre-based and community-based approach. Low Vision Rehabilitation is an integral part of the LVPEI’s pyramidal model of care delivery. Going forward, primary eye care centres will be established in the vicinity of this secondary centre. According to Dr Taraprasad Das, Vice Chairman, L V Prasad Eye Institute, “The centre in Keonjhar will look at the general and specifically eye health of people working and living in mining areas of Keonjhar. The LVPEI Keonjhar centre will also participate in the Universal Eye Health program initiated by the Government of Odisha. Under this program, the centre will conduct various school eye care and general eye screening programs. We will complement the local and Government health system.”
