International Women’s Day Celebrated at IMS

Bbhubaneswar: The International Women’s Day was celebrated at Institute of Media Studies (IMS) here on Friday to champion the advancement of women’s rights and gender equality.
The day is celebrated every year on March 8. This year, Women’s Day is celebrated across the globe on the theme ‘Better the Balance, Better the World.’
To mark the occasion, a seminar on ‘Gender Parity: Balance for Better’ was organised. Inaugurating the seminar, Member of State Women Commission Dr Snigdha Panigrahi said, “The ‘nuts and bolts’ of our ‘muscular’ society works on the principle of pulling down a woman and chaining her ‘under- control’ with every possible tool they can employ.”
Highlighting #MeToo movement, she said silence, taboo, disbelief and misogyny are some of the choicest invectives that occupy the thought process of a sexual harassment survivor, when she confronts the reality and decides to break her silence.
Appreciating womanhood and the importance of women in the society, Joint Director of Higher Education Dr Priti Prativa Bhol stressed on creating conducive environment for women to prosperous in all sectors. The day celebrates all the achievements of women, be it social, cultural or political, she added.
Women Activist Kanakalata Sahoo said, “When you add more women to any equation, there is a return on equality. The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #BalanceforBetter, because parity benefits us all. Equality is not a female issue; it’s a social and economic imperative.”
Among others, Course Coordinator of Social Work department Dr Gayatri Patnaik and senior faculty Raghunath Mandal also spoke.
