Report by Pratap Pradhan, Bhubaneswar: ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Bhubaneswar under its DST (TSP) Project (Carp seed production and integrated fish farming technology for livelihood development of Phailin affected tribal farmers of Ganjam District, Odisha) in collaboration with State Fisheries Department, Ganjam had organized a Tribal Fish Farmers – Scientists – Interaction Meet and Training Programme at PNB, Farmer’s Training Centre, Korapalli in Ganjam District on 5th July 2017. ICAR-CIFA had undertaken several such programmes in different parts of the country for the benefit of tribal and other cast populace. The main objectives of the programme are to increase the fish production and productivity from their ponds, production and supply of quality fish seed in the locality, adoption of better management practices (BMPs) for enhancement of production in a sustainable way and transfer of technology (TOT) through trainings and demonstrations to the end users.
Dr. J.K. Sundaray, Director, ICAR-CIFA; Dr. B.C. Mohapatra, Principal Investigator of DST Project and Principal Scientist, ICAR-CIFA; Mr. Siba Prasad Bhoi, Dy. Director Fisheries, (Ganjam Zone) and Dr. D. Satpathy, Director, College of Fisheries, OUAT, Rangeilunda were the eminent guests of the meeting. Besides, the fisheries officials from all CD Blocks of Ganjam District and more than 150 farmers of Kukudakhandi, Sanakhemundi, Digapahandi and Khallikote Blocks participated in the programme.
Dr. J.K. Sundaray, Director, ICAR-CIFA and Chief Guest of the function apprised the farmers that this project is first of its kind in the district. He advised the farmers to take up scientific aquaculture and integrated farming practices in their ponds for better economic returns and nutritional security. The institute would establish carp hatcheries for quality fish seed production in the area. BMPs would be suggested and capacity building would be carried out. He gave a lecture on “ICAR-CIFA technologies for farmers” in the meet.
Dr. B.C. Mohapatra, Principal Investigator of DST Project and Principal Scientist welcomed the delegates and farmers to the programme and highlighted the success stories of fish production from ponds from different parts of the country under different schemes of the institute. The portable FRP hatchery technology could be effectively used for carp seed production, which could be reared to fingerlings for grow-out culture. He encouraged the farmers to take up the aquaculture activities
Mr. Siba Prasad Bhoi, Dy. Director Fisheries (Ganjam Zone) and Guest of Honour emphasized the need for improvement of livelihood of tribal farmers through aquaculture practices and implementation of fisheries schemes. Dr. D. Satpathy, Director, College of Fisheries, OUAT, Rangeilunda and Guest of Honour thanked ICAR-CIFA for coming to South Odisha for dissemination of aquaculture technologies to the tribal farmers of Ganjam District.
Three numbers of publications jointly prepared by ICAR-CIFA and State Fisheries Department, Ganjam, Odisha were released in the occasion. Dr N.K. Barik, Scientist, ICAR-CIFA proposed vote of thanks.
