Digapahandi: ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Bhubaneswar under its DST (TSP) Project (Carp seed production and integrated fish farming technology for livelihood development of Phailin affected tribal farmers of Ganjam District, Odisha) and in collaboration with State Fisheries Department, Ganjam organized the Inaugural Session of the Training Programme on “Carp seed rearing” at Digapahandi OPDC Farm, Ganjam
District on 11 October 2017. ICAR-CIFA had undertaken several such programmes in different parts of the country for the benefit of tribal and other cast populace.
The main objective of the programme is to make aware of the tribal fish farmers to scientific carp seed rearing practices in their village ponds. Its ultimate aim is to increase fish production and
productivity from their ponds, production and supply of quality seed in the locality and adoption of better management practices (BMPs) for enhancement of production in a sustainable way. The meeting was attended by Sri. Debananda Bhanja, Joint Director (InLand) from the State Fisheries Department as the Chief Guest. He inaugurated the programme and had appreciated the endeavor of CIFA for the benefit of tribal farmers of the District. Dr. B.C. Mohapatra, Principal Investigator of DST Project and Principal Scientist, ICAR-CIFA; Mr. Siba Prasad Bhoi, Dy. Director Fisheries, (Ganjam Zone) and Mr. N.K. Maharana, AFO, Digapahani Block were the guests of the programme.
Besides, the fisheries officials of Ganjam District, 50 tribal fish farmers from Sanakhemundi & Digapahandi Blocks participated in the programme. Mr. Siba Prasad Bhoi, Dy. Director Fisheries (Ganjam Zone) gave the overview of aquaculture practices followed in Southern Odisha and different schemes available from
Fisheries Department, Govt. of Odisha. He advised the farmers to take up scientific aquaculture practices in their ponds for better economic returns and nutritional security.
Dr. B.C. Mohapatra, Principal Investigator of DST Project and Principal Scientist of ICARCIFA, Bhubaneswar welcomed the delegates and farmers to the programme and appraised
them the aim of the programme. He highlighted the success stories of fish production from ponds from different parts of the country under different schemes of the institute.
Mr. N.K. Maharana, AFO, Digapahandi proposed vote of thanks. The programme will continue for two days with lectures and practical demonstrations.
