Empowering Workers in Unorganized Sector can lead to harm free and disease free work environment

Bhubaneswar: Workers in the unorganized sector constitutes nearly 90% of total work force requiring focused attention for relief from exploitation, occupational health hazards and the ever increasing suffering due to employment related injury and accidents. The concept of ‘Vision Zero’ is fast gaining international acceptance to improve occupational safety and health standards in work place to achieve zero accident both in organized and unorganized sector.

People’s Cultural Center (PECUC),a leading voluntary development organization of Odisha, in collaboration with German Social Accident Insurance, (DGUV), through it’s focal point for India organized a workshop on 2nd July 2018 in the conference hall of Redcross Bhawan, Bhubaneswar with the theme “Empowering workers namely sweepers/scavengers in unorganized sector on safety, social security & skill development”

Around one hundred twenty participants including 90 scavengers/sweepers engaged by BMC and Contract Service Holders participated in this workshop. The intention was to carry out the program on mission mode with cooperation of stake holders from Industry, Government, regulatory authorities, NGOs and Trade Unions and expected to roll out in phased manner to ensure that such workers get smart with Safety, Health & Skill Development Techniques and Equipments etc. and promote a harm free, disease free work environment.

to services, programmes ,ensuring their entitlements can lead to harm free and disease Free work environment told by eminent speakers while speaking in this programme.Speakers in the workshop also focused on various preventive measures , social security measures, various programmes for children and women, accessing to various services,schemes and programmes, health and accident related facilities, etc.

While speaking on the occasion Sj.Panchanan Kanungo ,Former Finance Minister of Odisha told that there is need of convergence and proper coordination amongst all stakeholders . Giving example of certain safety and hygienic kit like dettol, shops, caps, towels, globes etc by the authorities can promote minimum standard of health . Dr. Ram Chandra Rout ,City Health officer, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation told that Personal and protective equipments, preventive vaccination shall be provided soon for scavengers and sweepers . Mr.Jamir ,Regional Director ,Employees State Insurance Corporation ,Govt.of India focused on registration under ESI and Provident Fund to access the entitlements .Mr. Bimal Kumar Sahu ,Head of Indo German Focal Point briefed on the purpose of the programme and focused on plight of scavangers and remedial measures . The programme was presided by Mr.Ranjan Kumar Mohanty,Secretary,PECUC and among others Dr.Malaya Pradhan,Deputy Director,Factories and Boilers(Safety) ,Govt.of Odisha,Sj.Biraja Mohapatra,Advocate, Supreme Court; Suryakant Swain, JLC; Mr. Dillip Kumar Mishra ,Entrepreneur , Mr.Satyanand Behera ,Trade Union Leader, Gurubari Nayak ,General Secretay,Gurubari Nayak spoke on the occasion.Mrs.Anuradha Mohanty,Eecutive Director,PECUC gave the vote of thanks.Mr.Jyoti Sankar Mohanty ,Programme Manager,Somnath Chand ,Advocacy officer,PECUC Mukesh Pattnaik.PECUC AND Sunita Barik,Indo German Focal Point office coordinated the programme
