DEUTSCHE CLEFT/ABMSS completes 3500 cleft surgeries in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe, a German based Child Aid Agency and its Indian affiliate ABMSS have together completed over 3500 free cleft surgeries in in its 10 years of journey in Odisha through its hospital partner Sri Sri Baroda Hospital in Bhubaneswar.
It’s really worth working to be a part of changing lives of these people in Odisha when 1 in every 800 children in India are born with Cleft Lip or Palate.

However, this is not limited to what all they do. They undertake extensive Search and Awareness campaigns to identify Cleft persons and help people understand about cleft and provide supplementary nutrition support to undernourished children and mothers.

Congratulating on this success, Dr. Dushyant Prasad, General Secretary of ABMSS said “We are extremely happy to be a part of this journey in Bhubaneswar in order to bring a positive change to the lives of so many children affected with cleft in Odisha. However, the work does end here, it’s just the beginning”.
Various research studies and data reveal that about 35,000 children in India are born with a cleft lip and palate every year and sadly one out of ten of these children hardly get to see their first birthday. A majority of these children and adults hail from poor families and they can hardly afford to a cleft surgery. Many of them are unaware that Cleft can be treated. That’s why Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe and ABMSS have been working since long to bring smiles among those people who need it.
Sharing his experience on working with Deutsche Cleft/ABMSS, Mr. Dillip Patnaik, Head of Cleft Project, SSB Hosiptal recalls “it was a nice idea to establish a cleft centre in our hospital where we could bring Smile among those who are with cleft and need support to get them treated. We are really thankful to Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe and ABMSS who came forward to support us financially and technically to make this possible for us. We run our hospital for a cause and there is no better way to serve people than bring smile among them and mainstreaming them in the society with just a simple surgery”.
Like Bhubaneswar, Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe/ABMSS works in over 22 locations at 12 states across India and has already completed 24000 cleft surgeries in India and working relentlessly to bring smiles among persons with cleft who need a better life for them.
