Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) today received seven complaints of water-logging by evening hours with the Bhubaneswar Operations Centre (BOC) receiving one and the Storm Water Control Room receiving six complaints respectively.
The civic body positioned 11 pumps at various low-lying areas as the city received 26.1 mm rainfall and the Odisha Fire Services placed six pumps at various locations. Yesterday BMC placed only six pumps at equal number of locations. Gouri Garden, Gouri Nagar, Ratna Villa, Paika Nagar, Mallick Complex, Nilakantheswar Temple, Gayatri Vihar, Sai temple near Garage Square are the common points where pump sets were placed both yesterday and today.
While the BOC complaints were registered through 18003450061, the Storm Water Control Room of BMC registered complaints through 0674-2432281. Yesterday both the numbers registered nine complaints by 10 O’ clock night.
Meanwhile, the multi-agency 24X7 control room at BMC comprising people from other line departments, BMC Drainage Division and BMC administrative staff remained today, which started functioning since yesterday morning. Thirteen teams across 13 sub-zones were deployed to monitor the situation across the city in 67 wards. Team BMC’s 40 engineers on high alert to manage any kind of situation due to high rainfall.
The six Fire Services pumps were deployed today at Ratna Villa – 1, Paika Nagar – 1, Gouri Nagar –1, Gouri Garden – 2, Gouri Shankar English Medium School -1. The 11 BMC pumps were deployed at Mallick Complex -1, Nilakantheswar Temple – 1, Paika Nagar – 1, Gayatri Vihar -1, Hansapal Bhoi Sahi – 1, Garage Chhak Sai Temple – 1, Nuagaon Main Road – 1, Megheswar Temple – 1, Buddheswari Colony – 1, Adhia Khal BJB Nagar – 1 and New Forest Park Colony – 1.
The 24X7 vigil by the civic body has resulted in a coordinated operation of the disaster preparedness mechanism ensuring better citizens’ safety and welfare. On Thursday BMC cancelled holiday for Moharrum in the wake of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall due to Cyclone Daye in and around Khurda district, though the Southern Odishan districts were mostly affected. The cyclonic storm was the result of a depression over West-Central and adjoining East-Central Bay of Bengal, which later intensified into a cyclonic storm.
