CIFA awarded Odisha Women fish farmers

Report by Saumya Parida; Palsaguda: Jai Hanuman (P) women self-help group of Palsaguda has brought laurels for Boudh district. The women group has the distinction of being the first SHG of Boudh district to receive a recognition from The Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Bhubaneswar.

The Institute is a national level apex research centre devoted to freshwater aquaculture. Smt Narayani Panigrahi, Secretary of the group received the recognition from the Dr P Jayasankar, Director, CIFA at a function held at Bhubaneswar today.  The award is presented to her in recognition of successful implementation of scientific fish farming practices in a pond called Khaliabundh, leased in from the panchayat. The group is being educated by CIFA since last three years under a project“ Transfer of Technology of Composite Carp Culture through Demonstration among SC/ST Women in Boudh and Purulia”.

Demonstrations were carried out in Boudh in around 9.5 ha. water body involving 114women, informedDr H K De, Senior Scientist.Kantamal FEO Sri AnantaramBehara was also actively associated in carrying out the demonstration work.

The Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture observed National Fish Farmers’ Day to mark the discovery of induced breeding of fish. As a part of this celebration the institute also organized Aquaculture Innovators’ Meet and felicitated 17 fish farmers from various parts of the country. Jai Hanuman (P) women self-help group is one of the winners of the coveted recognition. The awardees presented their success stories and shared their way of farming fish with the researchers and farmers present on the occasion.

The institute also brought out a volume “Aquaculture Success Stories”. It contains the detailed description of the innovative practices followed by the farmers.Before the conclusion of the programme, a question & answer session has been organized for the farmers where they could interact with scientists to discuss about their production related problems and other queries about various aspect of fish culture. A total of 150 farmers and farm women attended the celebrations.
