Centre sanctioned six Model Degree Colleges for backward districts of Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The State Government has asked the respective District Collectors to identify suitable locations and allocate land for the construction of campuses.

The Union Government sanctioned the MDCs under the Rashtriya Uchhartar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) which would come up at Patnangarh in Balangir, Kamakshyanagar in Dhenkanal, Kashi Nagar in Gajapati, Baliguda in Kandhamal, Junagarh in Kalahandi and Semiliguda in Koraput.

Higher Education secretary Bishnupada Sethi has asked the district Collectors to identify locations for MDCs with utmost importance. As per norms while five acres of land are required in urban areas, 10 acres are needed in non-urban areas for setting up these colleges and there should be no college within 10 km radius of other degree colleges.

The Higher Education has preferred a location with predominant rural population so that students of rural and backward regions would avail chances to pursue education in these colleges. However, the location should have good road connected to it.

Each MDC would come up at a cost of Rs12 crore of which Rss7.8 crore to be borne by the Centre and the rest by the State Government. Administrative building, faculty rooms, classrooms, laboratory, computer centre, hostels and other requisites would all be built with this sanctioned amount.

Sources said that the State Government would bear the excess expenditure, if required.

Earlier, the State Government had borne the excess expenditure for setting up MDCs under RUSA Phase I. Hostels would disability friendly and special facility would be ensured for girls.

The State reservation policy would be implemented for admissions in these colleges. There would be teacher-student ratio at 1:15 in these colleges. The MDCs would have internet access for all the students with Wi-Fi campus, said an official.
