Bhubaneswar: In the second day after the BMC Council okays the fine structure for the violators of polythene/plastic ban, three special squads of the civic body under their respective zonal deputy commissioners (ZDCs) collected a fine of Rs 13,700 and seized polythene/plastic of 24 kg.
While the South East Zone enforcement team carried out enforcement from Kalpana Square to Rasulgarh Square and seized 13 kg of polythene/plastic under the leadership of their ZDC Bimalendu Ray, North Zone squad raided 32 places and collected Rs 10,000 as fine and seized 7 kg of polythene and plastic under the guidance of its ZDC Pramod Kumar Prusty.
Interestingly, the BMC North Zone office formed a second enforcement team with lady community organisers. This team alone seized 3kg polythene/plastic and collected Rs 5,500 as penalty.
Similarly South East Zone collected a fine of Rs 3,700 and seized 4 kg of polythene/plastic under the leadership of Lalatendu Sahu. All the operations were coordinated by Deputy Commissioner Sanitation, Deepti Rani Sahoo.
The raids will continue on day-to-day basis in each zone of BMC and fines will be continued rigorously by the special squads to implement the enforcement.
As per the notification of the Forests and Environment Department, Government of Odisha, dated of September 29, 2018, there was a grace period of 30 days and after that the three BMC squads have already started their action swiftly and also seized polythene/plastics at various places since day before yesterday.
