Bhubaneswar: A student of Class XII, tennis enthusiast and committed to the game, Aditya Satpathy, has made his city proud by winning the Championship series – CS7 at Lucknow, recently, in under 18 boys category, organised by All India Tennis Association, but his winning a tournament during this time, has another tale to tell and inspire others, who play the game.
Defying all difficulties and pain, following an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction with meniscus surgery, Aditya has won the national tournament under his category, whereas as a normal practice after the recovery the players normally practice on court and never risk a tournament within such a short span of time.
ACL reconstruction and repair of a torn meniscus are among the most commonly performed arthroscopic surgeries of knee. Within the knee, these structures perform distinct functions. The ACL helps stabilize and support the joint. There are two menisci in the knee of human beings.
Aditya’s surgeon Dr. Sarthak Pattnaik , says “within six months a player can go back to the field, but to go and win a national tournament speaks indeed a lot of the commitment of the player. He has set a milestone and would be a source of inspiration for many players, who often struggle to make a comeback during their post-surgery days.’’ Dr. Pattanaik, who practices as Consultant of Arthroscopy and Sports Surgery at Sunshine Hospitals, Bhubaneswar, is extremely excited of the achievement of the boy and says that he looks forward for many more national and international achievements in the field of Lawn Tennis.
Aditya’s mother Sarojini Brahma, who works with the Bhubaneswar Smart City project, informs that her son had a ligament tear and had undergone surgery on April 22, this year. He is a student of city-based KIIT International School and is in Standard XII under the Commerce stream. She says that post surgery more than anything else he needed psychological support and faith that he can come back to the field. His father, coach and many of his friends and relatives stood by his side and helped him to remain composed and work hard for his comeback. The support extended by his surgeon and physiotherapist was also remarkable.
Tennis sources said that this tournament in Lucknow has marked the return of Aditya in tennis tournaments in the local circuit of the State Capital and following the break after surgery, he will be playing three ITF tournaments within December. He is currently, Odisha’s No. 1 player under the 18-year boys’ category.
Aditya’s tennis coach Farhan adds that Aditya was always a committed boy and it was this commitment that gave him such enormous strength to make a comeback within such a short time. Dr. Sudip Banerjee ,Sports Science India, Physiotherapist who had been helping Aditya with his physiotherapy, says that Aditya is an obedient student and listens to seniors and experts and obeys set target. “He will put his life to achieve his goal. It is this indomitable attitude of his that kept him going and helped him to rebound in such a short time,’’ he observes. His fellow players feel that the way Aditya has come back to the field, he would be a source of inspiration for many of them.
Contacted, Aditya says “I have taken inspiration from many sports persons as they, despite great challenges of life have excelled well in their domain. I would like to mention Yuvraj Singh and Leander Paes here as they have continued the game even after suffering a lot. I hope, mine is nothing in comparison to their hardships. ‘’
