Sambalpur: Farmers of the Hirakud command area have demanded minimum support price (MSP) of paddy to be fixed at Rs 1,200 a quintal. They have also submitted a memorandum addressed to the chief minister, Mr Naveen Patnaik, to the Sambalpur collector requesting him to consider their demand since the market price of seeds, fertilizer, pesticides and the escalating payment of agricultural labourers force them to make this demand.
“Unless farmers get Rs 1200 per quintal for paddy, they will not be able to continue agricultural activities for long,” said Mr Murari Purohit, a farmer leader.
The government had earlier increased the support price of paddy to Rs 900 per quintal which the farmers said is not sufficient because of the current market price. “Other states are giving bonus to farmers. Our government must do the same for the greater interest of the farmers of the state,” said Mr Prasant Nath and Mr Chandra Kant Panda. The farmers also held a meeting in front of the collectorate explaining the problems they face.
