Sambalpur: Different organisations of Sambalpur jointly called for a 12-hour bandh in the district demanding setting up of IIM in Sambalpur. Normal life was thrown out of gear in Sambalpur following a 12-hour dawn-to-dusk bandh call to protest the decision taken by the Odisha government to set up the proposed Odisha IIM in Bhubaneswar.
All educational institutions, government offices and trading and business establishments remained closed. The activists were seen picketing in the town. Vehicular traffic came to a standstill as the they blocked the road at many places. The protestors also detained Sambalpur-Rayagada Express train at Khetrajpur railway station. More than 10 protestors were arrested from the spot after which the train resumed its journey.
The protestors from various organizations and political parties blocked the National Highway-55 at Ainthapali demanding the withdrawal of the state government’s decision and setting up of the Institute in Sambalpur.
Notably, site for the establishment of IIM has been selected in Bhubaneswar following which people here raised concern over the alleged apathetic attitude of government towards western Odisha.
