Puri: More than 15 lakh devotees on Tuesday thronged Puri to witness the golden attire of the Lords, “Suna Besha”, on the chariots.
At least 25 bhandara mekap priests (treasury keepers), escorted by policemen brought the gold jewellery from the temple’s treasury. The deities were adorned with gold jewelleries weighing nearly 208 kg consisting of 20 or 30 types of designs.
Three-layer security of armed personnel around the three chariots was arranged by the administration during the “Suna Besha”. Around 100 sharpshooters stood guard on rooftops around the chariots, parked right in front of the temple.
Improved road connectivity and introduction of special trains by East Coast Railway facilitated the pilgrims from to come Puri and witness Sunabesha. While the devotees were allowed to enter the town by NH-203, they were allowed to return via Puri-Konark-Pipili route.
District Magistrate Dhiren Pattnaik, SP Anup Kumar Sahu, IGP RP Koche, IGP Soumendra Priyadarshi and IGP Sanjib Panda besides the temple’s Chief Administrator Arabind Padhi were present.
