Banki: The fire crackers during a marriage procession in midnight gutted 200 houses and 100 families were turned homeless in Bheda Ramachandrapur village under Banki subdivision in Cuttack district at about 2 am on Thursday, sources said.

The affected families demanding seven days relief and assistance later blocked the Banki-Kalapathar road for about an hour and half. Though there was no casualty as alert villagers pulled out children, women and elderly people from their houses but many villagers were injured either by the blaze or trying to douse it, sources said.

The fire destroyed property worth lakhs of rupees and it took four fire engines about four hours to douse the blaze.  The villagers stated they even alerted the bridegroom’s family from Brahmagiri area not to burst crackers during the procession, as it was summer and majority of houses in the village had thatched roofs, but they did not listen.
