Odisha: Old tusker dies of electrocution near Rajanagar village in Athagarh forest range
Athgarh: A tusker, aged about 70 years, died of electrocution in the dawn on Tuesday at a sugarcane field near Rajanagar village in the Athagarh forest range area, seven km from here.
Forest officials rushed to the spot and conducted post mortem.
On Monday night, the team of poachers spread electric wires near the sugarcane field and drove away the area’s lone tusker in that direction.
However, the poachers succeeded in their mission late. When the tusker died, it was almost morning and some farmers of Rajanagar on their way to their cornfields saw the incident and made it public, for which the poachers failed to take away the tusks.
Ironically, the forest officials, after recovering the tusker’s body, claimed that its death was due to ageing as they wanted to save their jobs.
But no one accepts their version as there were no symptoms of the elephant suffering from any kind of old age-related disease nor did it have any injury mark.
The viscera report of the dead tusker will reveal the truth, say knowledgeable circles here.
