Bhubaneswar: The state government has decided to engage two persons as Gaon Sathi, in each village under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), to coordinate and assist implementation of the programme.
The NREGS funds will be used to provide wages to these Gaon Sathis in each of the 50,000 villages where the programme is being implemented. By this the government will be able to engage at least one lakh people with the help of central funds and also register improved expenditure of the funds made available under the scheme.
A decision to this effect was taken at a review meeting presided over by the chief minister Mr Naveen Patnaik here today.
At least one of the two persons will be a woman and only tribal persons will be chosen in the scheduled tribe areas for such assignments, said official sources.
The Gaon Sathis will assist the junior engineers in the measurement of work and other jobs. They will be given a daily allowance on the basis of their work. Personswithin the age limit of 21 to 35 will be chosen for the purpose and the minimum academic requirement will be Class seven.
The highest educated persons of the villages and those interested will be given priority, the Chief Minister said and added that they will be imparted required training at the block level.
