Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), a statutory body of Government of India has launched Unique Identification (UID) number project , ‘Aadhaar’ in Odisha through which all residents above the age group of one year shall be enrolled in the project.
In a symbolic ceremony at Raj Bhawan, first citizen of the Odisha was enrolled under the project by Smart Chip Limited, an enrollment agency engaged by State Bank of India which is acting as registrar under the scheme. Sri Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare, His Excellency, the Governor of Odisha was presented with “Aadhaar Acknowledgement Receipt” by C. H. Narasimha Rao, Chief General Manager, State Bank of India, Odisha.
Aadhaar, a project the government termed as the “number for life”, promised a dignified life to the poor in the country. Once implemented in the entire Country, this unique scheme is expected to change the social service deliveries landscape forever wherein all residents shall be identified through capture of essential demographics & biometrics such as fingers scan; iris scan; digital photograph. The database of all the residents of India shall be linked with Central and State Government(s) schemes which would benefit to all residents especially to people below poverty line by identifying them and bringing them into the broader umbrella of various government schemes.
“Aadhaar number will be helpful in opening a bank account, passport and ration card and many other things especially for the poor and the migrant labourers and also providing Zero Balance Bank Account to the unbanked residents under financial inclusion plan of Reserve Bank of India”, said Mr. Rao.
Unique Identification project was initially conceived by the Planning Commission as an initiative that would provide identification for each resident across the country and would be used primarily as the basis for efficient delivery of welfare services. It would also act as a tool for effective monitoring of various programs and schemes of the government. The UID cards will help people in getting essential services like PDS, bank account, LPG connection and jobs in new places.
“The ‘Aadhaar’ unique identification number will enable inclusive growth and development for the deprived and empower the people of India to take full benefits from welfare schemes, in due course becoming a tool of development and social inclusion,” said His Excellency.
UIDAI has authorized State Bank of India (SBI) as the Registrar for Odisha and Smart Chip Limited as the Enrolment Agency along with other agencies. Smart Chip Limited is also a partner of GoO and has implemented a highly successful Public Private Partnership based Smart Card project in the Transport Department of State, apart from being one of the leading enrollment agencies under Aadhaar scheme operating in various states like; Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Delhi, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and Maharastra.
