Failure of family planning operation, women completely harassed over compensation in Orissa

Report by Amarnath Parida; Jagatsinghpur: Pregnant women who undergo sterilization operation has been completely harassed for non payment of insurance due to failure of family planning operation in Jagatsinghpur district. Failure of family planning operation and negligence of doctors and non payment of insurance have worsened the situation in this district in which women have not preferred for sterlisation operation.

Sources said that one Kunilata Behera of Termanpur village under Kujang block had undergone sterlisation operation under family planning prgrmme on 21st Dec'07 after delivering two children. Her operation case was done by one doctor Dillip Kumar Biswal at Kujang hospital. Later, she also obtained green card bearing number 69630 from family welfare department on 5th Feb'09.

After tubecotomy operation at government hospital, she has been pregnant after nine months of this operation. Her husband Alekha examined her wife to know the pregnancy of his wife but she has been witnessed two months delivery. He alleged that either health department or insurance company has taken to provide compensation for failure of this operation.

Sources said that government introduced insurance scheme to provide compensation Rs 20.000 due to failure of operation in 2005-06. Later this amount has increased Rs 25 .000 and now insurance company is giving Rs 30.000 towards compensation due to failure of family planning operation. Earlier, National Insurance Company had given insurance but now ICICI

Has given insurance amount to the women whose operation has been failure. It is learnt that every woman who would undergo family planning operation has to be insured under ICICI bank. Due to lack of awareness and illiteracy, many women have failed to apply for compensation in which they have deprived to get compensation.

Official's sources said that department has insured all the women who have undergone family planning operation. Even, steps have been taken to give awareness to the women for availing compensation in case of failure. Similarly, Mr Alekh has applied for compensation for failure of operation of his wife but no steps have been taken to provide compensation. Meanwhile, chief district medical officer Mr Manoranjan Das has received his aplacation for failure of famly planning operation so he has directed medical officer, Kujang to conduct an inquiry about this matter. Compensation has given to seven women for failure of family planning operation in this district. - He added.
