Bhubaneswar: A regional workshop on pulses diversity and exhibition was held at Regional Museum of Natural History (RMNH), Bhubaneswar. This was jointly organised by DesiBihanSurakshayaManch and RMNH . Representative from civil society organisations, govt. officials, farmers, scientist participated in the 2 days long deliberation. Prof.Radhamohan inaugurated the workshop with performing seed puja. He said that the major reason of decline of pulses cultivation has been the green revolution which focused only on rice and wheat.
The major areas of deliberation were conservation of pulses diversity, decline of pulses production and malnourishment, soil enrichment, production of quality seed, govt. supply of seeds timely to farmers, minimum support price, crop insurance for pulse cultivation, loss of foreign exchange due to import of pulses. Experts opined that it is high time for Govt. to review the focus of research on pulses at govt. research stations in order to enhance areas of cultivation of pulses and productivity of pulses. There should be reorient of research on crop improvement based on local varieties. Mr.PrasantMohanty, Executive Director of NIRMAN presented the overview of the pulses scenario and constraints and prospectus in the state of Odisha. Govt. should take it seriously to increase of areas of pulses cultivation and its productivity. Govt. should take steps to focus of 12 lakh ha. ofareas of rice-fallows. Pulses varieties like pigeon pea, rice bean, country beans and cowpea grown in tribal regions should be given govt. support in procurement, processing and insurance cover. Farmers shared the hardship in absence of processing facilities, absence of MSP.
