Report by Odisha Diary bureau, Berhampur: Every year, the World Health Organization selects a priority area of global public health concern as the theme for World Health Day, which falls on 7 April, the birthday of the Organization. The theme for World Health Day 2016 will be diabetes, a non-communicable disease (NCD) directly impacting millions of people of globally, mostly in low- and middle-income countries.
Diabetes is a chronic, metabolic disease characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose which may over time lead to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves. The prevalence of diabetes has been steadily increasing in the past few decades, in particular in low- and middle-income countries. Knowledge exists to reverse this trend through targeted prevention and appropriate care.
On this occasion the Berhampur children’s federation members organized rally and meeting at different slum such as Ambapua,Lanjipalli Goudabandha, Raghupati Nagar, Dhimira,Jagabandhu Bandha Huada and Jaganath Nagar. The children visited door to door to convince the importance of the World Health day to the communities. Through this process the children’s federation members discussed about the causes and prevention of Diabetes with their parents.
It is noted that Youth for Social Development (YSD) working with more than 2000 children in 30 slums in Berhampur since 2012. YSD able to form 27 child clubs and a city level children’s federation. Children are engaged in doing variety of activities in their neighbourhood. YSD has been working to ‘make Berhampur a child friendly smart city’ and to ensure government should provision basic services to the children living in urban poverty and ensure children participation in city planning, governance and development.
Children’s federation members such as Bala Das,Smruti Sahu, Pinky Das, Muna Das, Suraj Das, Mamali Das, Goutam, Amit Das and Radha Das took actively participation and from YSD Chandan Sahu, , Sujata Bisoi and Sasmita Behera facilitated to child federation members.
