Odisha: Berhampur is going to have the first ever Solid Waste Management Project of the state
Report by Odisha Diary bureau, Berhampur: Berhampur, the business city of Southern Odisha is soon going to have the first ever Solid Waste Management Project of the state. “With the financial and technical support from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) is going to implement the project as per the ‘Municipal Solid Waste Management and Handling Rules 2000’ within a timeframe of one year”, said Ajit Mishra, the Commissioner of BeMC in a Media Workshop held recently at the Sadbhavna Conference Hall of the RDC Office at Berhampur.
The workshop was attended by the Mayor Shiba Shankar Dash, Deputy Mayor Sanjukta Samal, Dr. R. C. Chayu Pattnaik, Berhampur MLA; Lingaraj Rath, the Collector In-Charge; BeMC Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, Executive Engineer, Health Officer and other BeMC officials, IFC Representative Ms. Adele Paris and Staff and media representatives of all major newspapers and television channels of Berhampur.
This Rs.70 crore worth solid waste management project for the city is to be implemented on Private Public Participation (PPP) mode, and the tender process for the project has already started. The last date for submission of tender papers is June 05, soon after which one of the participating companies will be chosen to undertake the job.
Besides setting up a state of the art processing plant, the selected private partner will be responsible for primary and secondary collection, transportation, segregation, recycling, treatment and scientific disposal of solid waste.
At present eighty four per cent of the solid waste of the city is generated from residential areas including 110 slums where thirty per cent of the city’s populace lives. The quantum of waste is being generated today is 138 TPD and is expected to increase to 250 TPD in the next three decades.
The BeMC has chalked out a communication programme by titling it ‘My City, Clean City’ to create awareness regarding the project among the inhabitants of the city. BMC believes that the residents will be able to proudly claim that Berhampur is ‘My City Clean City’ if this initiative is successful.
